Livin' in a Box, 7-12 July 2007

Michael Fortune, Vera Klute, Vaginal Vinyl, and Marie Louise O'Dwyer
27 Lindsay House, Patrick Street, D8

Curated by Deirdre Morrissey

Influenced by aspects of domesticity, Livin' in a Box plays with the challenge of showing art in a small modern urban living space. Modern city living demands small living spaces, created within larger apartment blocks, all still built with similar modernist characteristics primarily the simplification of form and the elimination of ornament. Living in this modular environment there is often the feeling of being "in a box, within a box", literally "living in a box". While the size of the space will influence the nature of how this work can be shown, the art work chosen references elements of the idea of an exploration of domesticity and the everyday within various spaces, taking into account banality, repetition, humour and some eccentricity.

Irish artist Marie Louise O'Dwyer is currently based in Spain. Her work often develops from her own performance in front of the camera. These actions vary, often concentrating on the repetitive and obsessive in domestic rituals or a variety performance in the midst of homogeneity all bordering on the eccentric. She was awarded the Queen St Studio Residency in Belfast by Paul O'Neill at the LAUNCH exhibition at the LAB, which she will commence in July '07.

Wexford artist Michael Fortune's work spans the formats of writing, video and photography in which stories, ritual, belief and identity feature predominately. His work revolves around highlighting magnifying and subverting the everyday lives of individuals and communities where he re-interprets and re-frames particular aspects for contemplation and discussion. His work also explores the personal and shared territories between humans and animals within the domestic environment. Michael Fortune has recently shown at Lighthouse Caravan Cinema, at the Old Truman Brewery, Brick Lane, London and at G126 Galway with his solo show Reigning Cats & Dogs.

German born artist Vera Klute's work focuses on the subjective perception of ordinary, everyday experiences. Often realistic settings are combined with abstract objects or images. Through this she tries to make the viewer experience familiar situations and processes in new ways. Taking the form of video and animated pieces the work illustrates mental processes through their physical manifestation in bodily functions. Upcoming exhibitions include Drawer, a drawing exhibition by members of Moxie Dublin, 21st June, The Red Stables, St Anne's Park, Mount Prospect Avenue, Dublin 3 and Life as Such, Vera Klute, Astrid Walsh & Laura Butler, 19th -24th July, Thisisnotashop, Benburb St, Dublin 7.

There will also be a live musical performance on the opening night especially devised for the House Projects exhibition from Vaginal Vinyl. Vaginal Vinyl are a trio of performance and sound installation artists. Barbara Nealon, Tara Kennedy and Jennie Moran are engaged in a variety of interactive public art practices. As Vaginal Vinyl they use songs, noises, costumes, props and lighting to make people feel romantic, nostalgic and thrilled. In September 2006 they played records on Dublin's Nitelink bus in a performance entitled Slow Set for Out of Site, Dublin Fringe Festival. In April '07 they performed in Hotel Ballymun and from May 17 th to June 7th they hosted Lovely Room, a special social evening at Leixlip Library where installing antique soft furnishings and nostalgic accoutrements they transformed it into an inviting recreational space.
